Boss Tony Pulis was happy to see Rodriguez net on his first friendly appearance for the club.

"Of course it was great for Jay to score a goal like that but even more important was the time on the pitch," said Pulis.

"He has had his injuries in the past and it's about getting Jay and all the players through the pre-season without any problems."

Despite their defeat, new boss Frank de Boer is pleased with the progress his side have made so far in pre-season. He said: "I know the players much better; it's not often that you get to spend pretty much 24 hours with them for seven days so it's good for the staff, especially the new members.

"Also it's good for the players to know me a little bit better and also to really implement what we want from the players - not the just the shape but also what I expect from them on the field."
