Joe Hart says Wayne Rooney remains England captain, and he was just a "stand-in" against Lithuania.
The goalkeeper took the armband at Wembley on Sunday in place of the suspended Gary Cahill, who was captain for the friendly defeat to Germany last week.
Rooney has been captain since 2014 but was not included in the most recent squad due to a knee injury.
England manager Gareth Southgate has also suggested Rooney needs to be playing more regularly for Manchester United if he is to keep his place at international level.
But Hart told ITV: "Wayne Rooney is our captain, I know that, I was his stand-in today (Sunday). Jordan Henderson and Gary Cahill know that too. I was just last man standing.
"It's obviously a proud moment to captain my country but I know my place in this team and I just want to try to perform to my best level and hopefully get another start."
With Hart captaining the side, England produced a workmanlike display to beat Lithuania 2-0 thanks to goals from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy.
"It wasn't pretty, was it? But we got the goals we wanted," said Hart. "I think they are a better team than maybe they gave themselves credit for.
"They were quite happy not conceding many and then seeing what happens. They are frustrating afternoons for everyone. We'd like to have scored five or six but we didn't. We're top of the group and our goal is Russia."
